~ ALBUM REVIEWS ~

I have a couple of album reviews that I'm bringing to you today. The first is Layers by R&B /Electronic artist Minh. Released on the Jayden Records label, Minh's music is both smooth and soulful yet futuristic modern. His style reminds me of Maxwell with a soulful, sensuous style and the beautiful and layered electronic sound reminiscent of BT. Some favorite tracks of mine are Fresh and Star. Layers will be released on November 23rd, 2010. You can preview tracks on the album at the artist's website and the Jayden Records label website. His past works have been used in films and tv shows, with a song on the upcoming Layers album already licensed to the indie film Herman & Shelly. His music from his previous works are available on iTunes. Check him out!

Love Darling is another independent band whose music has been featured in television media, as a theme song for the TV show "The Real L Word" on Showtime. Many have said that their musical style channel's groups like The Smashing Pumpkins and the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs. Well, I'm going to add two more rock groups that I like that their style reminds me of: The Dandy Warhols and The Donnas. They can be edgy, hard driving, fun and bluesy all at the same time and their latest album Sunshine Dust is one of those albums that you can sit down and listen to it all the way through. However some of my favorites on this album are Cadence and Dust In My Pocket. Love Darling rocks! Well, here is the last show of 2008! I won't be back until the end of January 2009. I need a long break. I've been missing in action and I'm sorry. I haven't had time to write, blog, podcast or anything! Sometimes we're just too busy for our own good, but I will have a lot of great new music lined up for the next show in January. Until then, enjoy this one! My favorite songs in this episode are So Into You and Nobody Knows Me, two beautiful songs. Don't you agree?

So Into You

1.Tamia Washington - I first heard a riff from this song some years ago by some now defunct mainstream rap artist and I really liked the sound of it, I just hated the rapping over it. So I went on a quest to find out the original song and as far as I know this is it - and I've been loving it ever since. It's one of my favorite songs of all time and Tamia has a lovely voice. Ashbury

2. Morgan Page - Morgan page is one of the best electronic musicians out there in my opinion. See yourself sitting back on a high rise balcony on a late summer evening, sipping a gin martini and enjoying the summer breeze, with this sultry song in the background. . . great stuff! You Don't Know Me

3. Ben Folds - I first heard of this artist on the podcast Filmspotting. They often play interesting music in between show sections from indy artists and this is one that they've played that I really like. Find more from Ben Folds at his website.

4. The Dandy Warhols - Of course I love playing the Dandy Warhols music, they being a local band as well. Really cool song from their most recent album. Find more from them at their site.

6. Aya - A wonderful new found artist that I really like. I first heard Aya on Pandora, this song in particular and I absolutely fell in love with it! it's one of those lounge-in-the-summer- evening-and-and-sip-a-drink songs. Find more from Aya here and here.

Red Clay

1. Dwele (Andwele Gardner) - I love Freddie Hubbard, especially his work from the 1970's and renditions of his music (such as Red Clay) by other talented artists, like Dwele are always nice to hear. Dwele is a popular r&b artist from Detroit, Michigan. You can find more about him at his website, here, and here. You can find this song on the album Gilles Peterson BBC Live Sessions CD, at CD Universe. Dwele is a great artist so go check out his stuff. You can also find some of his videos on YouTube. The Gilles Peterson album is an excellent CD filled with great music. Check it out!

Better Love

2. Anthony Hamilton - Anthony Hamilton is one of my favorite r&B artists. His stuff is just down home goodness! You can find his music at his website and on his Myspace page. Not all of his music is on independent labels but I believe this song is.

Mirror Me

3. Nikki Williams - This is a great little song I found through Songza. You can find more from Nikki on her Myspace page.

Always

4. Kira Fontana - A really beautiful song I found from a great album called Inner Revolution. Check out her music on her site and her Myspace. I really love her simple, minimalist style. You can find concert and gig information there as well.

5. Louise Goffin - I absolutely love this song! First heard it on Smallville, season 1 or 2, I forget which, but it was a long time ago. Beautiful song. It on Louise's Sometimes A Circle album. Wednesday's Child

6. Emiliana Torrini - I swear she reminds me of Bjork (just not as crazy)! I learned of her through listening to Thievery Corporation and also the work she did for Howard Shore on the Lord of the Rings filmscores. This song is from her album Love in the Time of Science. Great, haunting song, just what I like! You can find her at her website.

1. Autolect - I think that Autolect is one of the best and most creative hiphop artists on the scene. Check out and purchase his latest album Celestine Progeny either at his Myspace page, Amazon.com or Mobile Underground. You won't be disappointed.

High Noon Stank

2.The Primeridian - This song is smart, sexy, full of humor and, well, as they say on their web page about their music,"beautifully melodic, soulfully hypnotic, funked out for your listening pleasure." I agree. The Primeridian is a cool hiphop duo that hails from Chicago. Find them on their Myspace page.

Don't C Us

3. DJ Food Stamp - Dj Food Stamp is a local hiphop artists from Eugene, Oregon. This guy makes some great music. Find him on his Myspace page, check out his full length albums and Eps. Great Stuff! I even love his moniker - DJ Food Stamp! How cool is that?

Caught Red-Handed

4.FREaKS - This is a really cool song I came across on Garageband.com. it reminds me of those stripped down early 80's pop songs like Jesse's Girl or I Don't Wanna Lose Your Love Tonight by Outfield. Except this song is a little more subversive sounding! I think it's a fun song. You can find more from this band on Garageband.com. I can't seem to find any info about them anywhere else.

Black Grease

5.The Black Angels - If you've seen the new online commercial for T-Mobile's new Google/Android/G1 Phone then you've heard this song. I love it. it's an obvious throwback to the Rolling Stones scrappy, psychodelic sixties rock. it's agreat song, almost like an anthem. Anyway it's from their album Passover. This is a great band. Check them out at their website The Black Angels.com.

Angry Johnny

6. Poe - This is a great, moody, rainy day song for me and I love her voice. Of course she's got her own website where you can find all information about her, her music and concerts.

Chocolate Jesus

Tom Waits - Tom Waits is one of those one-of-a-kind artists. You either get him or you don't. I love his work and I have three albums by him, this song is on the album titled Mule Variations. If you haven't heard his music before and you like original, interesting one-of-a- kind music, get his double album Blood Money/Alice. It's one of the best albums to come out of 2002. I played Chocolate Jesus because it seemed creepy and moody and a little dark and humourous which seemed appropriate for the last day of October!

Tam Lin

Fairport Convention - I know this is a big departure from what I normally play but I love this song so much. I'm a big fan of the late Sandy Denny and Fairport Covention and I felt that this song was in keeping with the mood people get into on October 31st! It's a beautiful song in lyrics and in melody. Hope you liked it. Sadly, Sandy Denny is no longer with us but you can find more from this group at their website, old stuff and new.

I think this is a particularly great show. Hope you enjoyed it too!

Femi Kuti - Son of the great Nigerian musician Fela Kuti, he is just as talented as his father and I love this song. The beat, the melody, the content it all comes together in a beautiful and infectious piece of music. I love music from Nigeris anyway. Archipelago

Quantic - Quantic has worked with many wonderful musicians. It's good to hear music strictly by him. He also works with another group that he helped create, the Quantic Soul Orchestra. Either way, you're going to hear some great stuff!I think this is a wonderful song and I use it as the intro to my FringeTheory podcast. Dark Heart Dawning

BT - Of course I've played BT before. hey, I love BT! he's one fo the best electronic musicians out there. This song is off of his Emotional Technology album. Anyway, you know where to find his stuff!

Filho Maravilha

Jorge Ben (or Jorge Ben Jor) - This song has an interesting story behind it, named after a Brazilian sports star. Jorge Ben is one of my all time favorite musicians, hands down! I think he's one of the best musicians in the world! To me he's one of those artists that can create an entire album of songs that are gems, something you can listen to the whole way through. Besides that he's one of the most influential Brazilan musicians in the world. This is a veru old song from him when he was much younger. You can check out his discography at his website. There is a link that translates the Portuguese into English if you need it. I would encourage you to check out and explore the wealth of music he has given the world. You will be better off for it!

1. Grayskul - Great song from Grayskul. They have a new album out now called Bloody Radio. 3. The Shins - Local to Portland, OR, like the band Oh Darling,The Shins always come out with good music. I also like giving props to local bands! Here's their website, and the Myspace page. This song isn't new but it's nice!

4. Albert Hammond Jr. - This artist (and his band) is new to me but judging by this song I think I'm really going to like their work in the future! This song is on the album named ¿Cómo Te Llama? So far, I like his music. You can find more from him at the Myspace page and the artist's website.

5. Oh Darling - I really enjoy their music. It's fresh and playful. They remind me of The Cranberries, but their music is better in my opinion! This song is off their newest album coming out this month called Nice, Nice!

1.Kidz in the Hall - It's amazing how independent hiphop and rap is far superior to most of the mainstream hiphop these days. Kidz in the Hall reminds me of Mos Def and Talib Kweli whom I really love! And yeah, they remind me of Kanye too but that's an obvious association. You can find more of Kidz in the Hall on MySpace.

2. Autolect - Indiefeed Hiphop podcast has become one of my favorites and I find quite a few artists from this show. Autolect is one and has fast become a favorite of mine. This song is tight. I love the beats on this song. Like i said this stuff is far better than anything you'll hear on commercial radio and that's all there is to it. You can find more music by Autolect on Myspace. The new album that this single will be on, Between God and the Deep Blue will be available in September. This is a great album!

Hoover (Hooverphonic) - Don't laugh but I first heard about Hoover when I saw the film Stealing Beauty. I loved the soundtrack and bought it and that's how I was introduced to this trip hop group. You can find their music and more on their official website.

3. Donna Lewis - Donna Lewis has a lovely voice and her songs are always fresh and original and fun to listen to. This single, Shout is on her new album In The Pink. A beautiful, summery song. just the kind of stuff I love! Check out her new album and more about her at her website, DonnaLewis.com.

4. Skalpel - I've been a long time fan of Skalpel's music. This is one of my favorite songs on their album, titled Skalpel. The entire album is great but this punchy little number really stands out becasue it's so light hearted. Their most recent album is also a gem and it's called Konfusion. 5. Sweet Electra - I heard this song on Anji Bee's Chillcast show. Beautiful song. This group is from Mexico. Reminiscent of Thievery Corporation. Or Povo. In any case, its sensuous and beautiful. You can find more music from them on MySpace. As always.

1. Hed Kandi Ft. Amp Fiddler - Infectious song! Amp Fiddler is one of my favorite R&B artists and I love his work with the UK based Hed Kandi. Hed Kandi looks like a music site for the jet set crowd. The only thing is, the site has animation and players that all of a sudden open up and start playing on your screen - LOUDLY. So be mindful of that if and when you decide to check the site out. Other than that, if you like the smooth house sound, check them out!

2. Slim Smith and the Uniques - I love this song! I've been looking to collect very old Jamaican reggae from before 1969. In any case I first heard this song on the Lostcast podcast, no kidding. Mostly Slim Smith's work with the Uniques is hard to find but you can find one album by them on Amazon.com. You can also find mp3 by him on Amazon. Also, you can find album by other early Jamaican artists (read: pre-Bob Marley era) there as well. Have fun searching!

3. Baaba Maal - From the Buddha Bar series, Vol. 7, this is a breezy, sexy, laid back song. You can find this sophisticated and eclectic chill out and lounge compilation series at George V Records. You can find lots of other fantastic compilation projects on the site as well.

Hello folks! It's been a while since I've released a new episode for Urban Outside but I'm back. Urban Outside will now become a bi-monthly podcast due to time constraints. I have a new full time job that's taking up a lot of time so I won't be able to release a show each week.

So, look forward to a new episode every other week starting the week after next week. I'm also hoping that in the future I'll be able to do interviews of other podcasters and musicians and release them as special shows for Urban Outside. Until then, see you later!

4. Da Lata - I first heard Da Lata on KBOO FM, a community radio station out here in Oregon. Da Lata was played a lot and that's where I first heard of the group. This song comes form their album Songs From The Tin. It's a fantastic album. 5. Bugge Wesseltoft - From his album Moving, I first heard about this artist from just browsing around a site called Gnod, looking for artists similar to Cinematic Orchestra and Skalpel, electronic jazz groups that I really like. This was a few years ago. The name Bugge Wesseltoft came up, so I decided to explore his stuff by previewing his music on Amazon.com. Love his music. He's more of a jazz artist and I know that this isn't a jazz music podcast but I figured that it can't hurt to sprinkle a little bit of different in the show every now and then. I think the song is beautiful and wonderful. I hope you do too. You can find more of his music on his website.

6. Zero 7 - Like Thievery Corporation, Zero 7 is one of my all time favorite groups. There soft, dream-pop electronica sound is beautiful and I like beauty in all things. 3. She's Huge - One of those rock/pop groups popular when I was young, I still enjoy listening to them from time to time. They broke up back in 2002. Pity. Their stuff can be bought from iTunes or any record store.

4. Apart - Found on garageband.com his vocal style reminds me of Ian Axel. I think it's a beautiful melody which is what I like about good pop music. You can find more from this artist on the sixtyone and MySpace too. This artists creates pop and soul. Nice.

5. Koop - I love Koop. Anything that is smooth, light and gorgeous sounding is fine by me and Koop fits that bill. I believe that this version of the song is the original version from what I played a few months ago. Koop has a more recent release out. Check them out.

Calling all fellow bloggers and podcasters out there!

Podcasting and blogging is just coming into its own but we all need as much help from each other as we can get. The new media community is new, close knit and rather small right now and many of us are still learning lessons as we go along in the business.

I listen to quite a few podcasts and one of those is the Geek News Central Podcast, hosted by Todd Cochrane. The guys over there have a cool new site created specifically as a resource for bloggers and podcasters. It's called podcastFAQ.com, "the place with answers to frequently asked podcasting questions."

You can also get information about meet-ups and podcasting conventions around the country or even around the world. 5. Paul Wright - I know it's kind of an inspirational/religious song but it has a beautiful, lush pop sound that I really like. And hey, if I can play music that's explicit, I don't think a nice song like this will hurt anybody. I first heard from him on Last.fm, surprisingly enough. 6. Tahiti 80 - Well, I played a song by them last week, but hey, I love them! Their MySpace page, their website. So smooth, so summery, so fun!

7. Akustikfilm - Very interesting group. As they put it, on their Podsafe Music network page: "From nature’s sample board to urban voices and echoes ++ akustikfilm collects soundscapes on this planet and transforms them into musical film." Perfect for a podcast like this, I think. You can find more free music for downloads from them on their website. Free music is always good. Check it out!

8. Thievery Corporation - Well, it's always great to end things with these fellas. Especially with a martini in hand. They make the kind of music that conjures up martinis in swank, dark lounges. oh yeah, their MySpace page. Looks like they have another single out!

1. J Medeiros - This is a beautiful song but with a deep message. Don't get too much of that in mainstream music. Medeiros is one of my favorite hip-hop artists.

Your Love Is Mine
2. Holly Golightly - This woman sounds dangerous. I love her musical style. It's sexy and urbane in a vintage kind of way. I wonder if she plans to work with the Greenhornes again? I hope so. You can find her music and more information on her website. Nice site too!

3. Damien Rice - When I first heard Volcano a few years ago I was impressed with this Dublin artist and I ran out and bought his album. He continues to impress with his gorgeous acoustic songs and voice. I also love it when artists and hidden tracks to an album. That always gets bonus points with me! 4.Jeremy Kay - I first heard this song on the show Numb3rs. See? I find a lot of stuff from TV. Thought it was a great, inspirational song. Kay makes good music anyway. I believe you can find some of his songs on the Arrested Development soundtrack. His website.

6. Anoushka Shankar - I really enjoy the whole east Indian electronic sound. Its mesmerizing. This is from the daughter of the famed Indian musician Ravi Shankar (and of whom I own an album by as well.) She is also half sister of Nora Jones, but a talented and respected musician in her own right. You can find her work on her website and her MySpace page.

7. Pole - I love Pole and have for a long time. He is the standard of all minimalist electronica in my humble opinion. Of course, you can disagree. Just know that you are wrong! (Just kidding!). It's amazing how Pole can create accessibility and beauty with such bare essentials. Check out his MySpace page for the Steingarten remixes if you haven't already done so!

Another week, another show. You might find that the pop songs I've chosen for this week's show have a summery sound to them - that was done on purpose. It's been raining like nobody's business around here in Portland and I wanted to see the sun. I got my wish today, too!

1. Shut Dem Down Records - I found them on Garageband. They also have a podcast you can check out on that page as well! It's amazing the good music you can find on Garageband and the Podsafe Music Network. There's a quality and passion in this song that you don't find on "super refined" process sh*t on commercial hip hop stations. We have a really horrible one here in Portland. I'm amazed it's still on the air. It's awful. ShutDem Down is cool though.

2. Motion Man - I love this song! It's totally old school, kinda freaky too. I love that old school sound, though! Reminds me of Kool and the Gang, or something by Michal McDonald. You can find more from him at his MySpace page. You can buy his music at eMusic.

3. Les Baxter - You were probably wondering "What?!?" I listen to Live365 quite a bit and there's a Tiki Tiki music station there I enjoy listening to. They play a lot of this kind of 60's spaced-out, tiki cha-cha club, exotica electronica-like music. I just threw it in there to be different. You can find more of the late, great Les Baxter's music on the official Les Baxter website. He's made a lot of fantastic music over the years. I would really encourage you to check his stuff out! YOu can find quite a bit of free music on the site!

4. Moby - I've been a fan of Moby for a long time. He always comes with the goods. One of the greatest electronica musicians in my humble opinion. Find his music on his site and get free music there as well.

5. Nada Surf - Not a new group but a group that I am only recently acquainted with. I really love their sound. They remind me of Tahiti 80 and any group that reminds me of them gets a thumbs way up from me because I love Tahiti 80! Winter in the Hamptons
6. Josh Rouse - Another artist with that beautiful, pop sound that I enjoy. I first heard his music on Pandora. You can find him at his website and on his MySpace page. You can find hi music on iTunes too!

Soul Deep
7. Tahiti 80 - This is my favorite group! I love just about everything they make and I have all of their albums. They are so light an airy and fun to listen to, especially in the summer. You can find their music on their fabulous website and on their MySpace page. Lots of great music to be found there!

Come to think of it, all of the pop songs I played on this show were pretty summery. The kind of stuff you might listen to in July while driving around with the top down! Enjoy the show!

4. Povo - I have no idea how to pronounce the name of this song but I love it! It's a fun, little piece of jazzy electronica. I think electronic music is one of the best things that's happened to jazz. For me it's the best of both worlds. Anyway, Uam Uam is an old song. 6. Tommy Tutone - I decided to go back. You might be wondering why I played this song. Well, I check a site called RIAA Radar each week to see if the music that I want to play belongs to the RIAA or not. Surprisingly this song isn't on a RIAA label so I felt it was safe to play it. I'm having some odd problems with the layout of this blog for some reason. I don't know if it's template issues or what. I'm trying to get that fixed. As I stated in my last post, I will be changing feeds by the end of this month. 1. Little Brother - I love this song. It reminds me of the days when mainstream hiphop was fun. Little Brother proves that independent hiphop is where it's at. Find them on their MySpace page or The Hall of Justus. I first heard of them through the Indiefeed hiphop podcast. They just dropped a new album, Get Back, and are on tour right now.

2.Median - Of course this is one of my favorite hiphop artists. From his album, Median's Relief. It's a great album and this is an artist that will go places in my opinion. He's just that good.

3. Marie Digby - From L.A., I first heard one of her songs on Smallville. Wonderful voice. She has a lot of great music projects that you can view on her MySpace page, like concert dates, songs, latest releases and music videos on YouTube.

4. Amel Larrieux - She has such a beautiful voice, just like Marie does and she does jazzy, alternative pop songs like this one and also R&B. One talented woman. Find out about her latest album release, songs and concert dates on her MySpace page and her website.

6. The Greenhornes featuring Holly Golightly - I saw Bill Murray's Broken Flowers and that is where I first heard of The Greenhornes. They have a strong 1960's influence to their music that they've honed and made into their own unique sound and boy, is it great music.

7. Midival Punditz - I've been a longtime fan of this group. Their music never fails to impress me. They always bring something cool to the table. This song is a dark, moody dreamlike piece that stays in my iTunes player for rotation all of the time. Find them on MySpace and their website. 8. The Gentleman Losers - I first heard of this group through the Solipsistic Nation podcast. A beautiful, haunting song. The rest of the album is wonderful too. It's like melancholic poetry. Changing Feeds in 2008!

Just another blog update for listeners out there!

In January my podcast host will change from Talkshoe to Podango. I will still be using the Talkshoe feed in January to give you all time to resubscribe to the new feed but by February I won't be using the Talkshoe feed any longer nor will I be using Talkshoe as my hosting site for the show.

So, I wanted to let those of you that subscribe through the Blogger blog RSS feed first. Next in January I'll be discussing this process a little more for other subscribers that get the show through Talkshoe or through some other means about the feed change.

Kaze - I listen to the Indiefeed Hip Hop podcast and I hear a lot of excellent hip hip artists through them, like Kaze. I especially love it when they give props to the old R&B and soul artists like Curtis Mayfield by using clips from those good old soul songs. If you like what you heard from Kaze you can find him at his MySpace page. You can also buy most of his music on iTunes. He's a great artist!

2. Call Cupid
Kay B - He reminds me of Tyrese and is just as handsome as Tyrese too! When you want a good R&B song to slow dance to with your man or your girl this is perfect! I found this British artists through the podsafe music network. You can also find his music on his own MySpace page.

3. Please Stay
Mindy Smith - Like I've mentioned on another post I found this artists through one of the few terrestrial stations that still play interesting music and independent artists. I love Mindy's soft, melodic vocals. I think most consider her to be alternative country. She always makes wonderfully melancholic songs.

4. Always Love
Nada Surf - I first heard about this group through NBC's Heroes TV show, (one of my favorite shows) and I'm not embarrassed to say that. You can find a lot of great music through TV. I love finding new music through my favorite TV shows. This one's a gem from their album titled Lucky. Their newest album will be coming out ion 2008! You can find them at their official site and on MySpace and you can also find concert dates there too.

5. Five After One
Kmotive - I found this artist on the podsafe music network. He reminds me of The Dining Rooms. I really like him. He has mentioned Kenna, Postal Service, Massive Attack all as influences. You can find him on the podsafe music network and on his design website. He's a graphic designer too? Awesome!

6. When 6 Loves 9
Only Child - I have the compilation album Future Lounge 3 from Stereo Deluxe Records and it's one of the best compilation albums I own. Every song is a gem. Envision yourself with an ice cold martini in and relaxing on a leather couch in some nice pad or lounge and listening to this on a summer evening. Can you? I can! Only Child is really just one artists, Justin Crawford. You can find more about him or purchase his soulful tunes him here, here, and here. And here is a BBC interview with the DJ artist.

7. Ab Ke Baras
MIDIval PunditZ - I love the PunditZ. Been loving their work for years. They are so far out and delicious! If they are featured on a compilation album like this one they have some of the best songs on the album. The only one who tops them in my opinion is Cheb I Sabbah. This song comes from the 2002 Asian Massive compilation album from Six Degrees Records Travel Series. (one of the very best labels on the planet). I own a lot of Six Degrees albums. Yu can find them on their site a, Myspace and calabash music. On the Calabash site you can find free music downloads from them and from other world artists. Check it out! Hope you enjoyed the show!

J. Medeiros - I try to look for hip hop artists with a social conscience, artists that infuse important social or spiritual messages in their music. Medeiros makes great sounding music with a conscience. His commentary on today's world is always on point. You can find his music on his website. His new album, Of gods and girls, is excellent.

2. State of Emergency
Baba Israel and Yako - I respect artists that can make good music and inform people about their faith through that music. I found this hip hop group on the Podsafe Music network. It's refreshing when male hip hop artists make music about their faith in God rather than cashing in on cynicism, nihilism and hatred of women. 3. It's Been Written - Overnite/Shifty
1st Supper - I enjoy music from 1st Supper. They are from the UK. I find most of their music for my shows on the podsafe music network. Currently their site is under construction and I don't know when it will be live but I think it's a good idea to bookmark it and come back to check often. If you want to contact them, they leave their email addresses on the Luv Productions site.

4. Acid Tokyo
KCentric - This artist's influences range from Medeski, Martin and Wood, PortisHead, John Coltrane, Outkast. Nice. You can find his work on the podsafe music network and his website.

5. Who Will Find Me?
DJ Shah featuring Adrina Thorpe - A beautiful song, if rather "techno like", it has a very lush sound that I like and Adrina's ethereal vocals make it even better. Whyjacks - Someone emailed me and told me about this band, Whyjacks. I enjoy it when listeners and readers let me know about other independent artists. That's the same way I found out about Grown Folks. Whyjacks make pop and acoustic music and they place a lot of importance on sound quality and craft. 8. You Are Not Alone
Keram - I found this artists through Garageband.com. Alternative, folksy or acoustic pop music is one of my favorite kinds of music and this song's a good example of it. I really love this song. 4. Underworld - I love almost everything from Underworld. This comes from their latest release. Preview the album on their MySpace page.

5. Tabla Beat Matrix - From the album Tabla Beat Science, this was the very first electronica album that I ever bought and it got me hooked on electronic music. I just picked up the album randomly and decided to give it a listen right in the store. From here I broadened out my tastes. They might do the same for you. 8. Bob Schneider - I've been a fan of Schneider's rock/pop/acoustic style for a long time. He's a multi-talented artist just like Bruce Springsteen. 1. Lonely Out Here
ATL Producers - I really like this group! They make great music! They're from Atlanta, Georgia. You can find them on the podsafe music network and their webpage. They specialize in making a lot of different music for podcasts which is an excellent reason to check them out.

2. The Basis of Breakneck
Ben Base - This song kind of had that old school sound and I loved that! If you like it and want to hear more from this artist you can find his music on the Podsafe Music Network and his MySpace page. Check him out!

3. Man On Fire
Atlas - Atlas was influenced by the hip hop greats like Wu-Tang Clan and Nas and I think it shows. Like he says on his podsafe music network page, his music is straight forward with no frills.

4. My Prima Donna
Artificial Intelligence In Texas - A great new wave inspired song. This group is heavily inspired by groups like U2, The Cure, Joy Division, REM, Ramones, The Smiths. You can find their music on their podsafe page and their MySpace page.

Koop featuring DJ Patife - I first heard music from this group on another non-music podcast. Koop is from Sweden. Their sound was so smooth and silky sounding that I was hooked. There are different versions to this lovely song. You can find more music from Koop at their MySpace page.

Bangout Productions - A fun song to listen to! Found on their podsafe network page. This hip hop group is from Alabama ( I have a lot of relatives there) and they site this web page (KhaoMusic.com) where you can find more news and info on other hip hop groups working with Kevin Khao Cates. Check it out. There's a lot of great music there!

3. Fillmore Dub
The Numb Project - I have this double album. One of the best electronica albums to come out in 2002. Chris Calarco is the name of this artist and he's a local artist. The album is called Soundbridge Sessions. The latest album out is called --. You can purchase both at CD Baby or mp3.com. If you like DJ Krush, you'll like this guy! The last time I checked he had his own website: www.thenumbproject.com. Doesn't seem to be up and running right now but maybe it was down for maintenance.

4. Louie's Last Stand
The Numb Project - From the same double disc album. I hope this artist comes out with another album soon. To be honest besides the website, which appears to e down, there isn't a whole lot to be found on this artist as far as I know right now. I did write a review of his album a couple of years ago. If you know about him or what he's doing currently email me or post a comment on the blog.

5. Silberfisch
Pole - This song is on Pole's (Stefan Betke) third album, 3, the yellow album for people who might want to look for it in record stores. He's a long time favorite electronica artist of mine and I have the album. For some people Pole can be an acquired taste. Sort of like absinthe. Once the taste is acquired you really enjoy it and your appreciation deepens. Silberfisch is one of the more "accessible" songs on the album. 6. ytinav
Dictaphone - Another minimalist group from Berlin that I enjoy. This song is from their album Vertigo II, released in 2006. You can find more current music and news from them at their MySpace page and their website.

7. Weightless
Royksopp - From Royksop's Melody AM. You can't go wrong with that whole soft rock-Ambrosia 1970's-1980's sound! I love it! Ok, it isn't exactly like that but it's kind of reminiscent of that sound in my opinion. Anyway they make great music! For more information go to their website.

8. Right On Said Jeebus
Hot Bitch Arsenal - I found this group through their Garageband page. I love this song. It's funny what you can find just listening to random stuff sometimes. You can find a lot of good music. It's amazing what you can find out there. I wonder why I never hear the artists in this show, or in the other shows on most terrestrial stations. You can just think of Urban Outside as an independent, internet version of a Z100 radio station - what Z100 ought to be but isn't.

1. All My Soul
Ques - An artist that surpasses most rappers and hiphop artists on the mainstream scene today, he has some of the best music you wanna hear. He even opens for popular artists like 50 Cent. But he's a whole lot better and more socially conscious. You can buy his newest album Open Book at CD Baby. 2. Possibilities
Amp Fiddler - I use one of Amp's songs for my intro and outro. This nu soul artist is the spaced-out, cosmic kind. He's like Medeski, Martin&Wood for Nu Soul and he's been around for a long time making great music! This dude used to work with George Clinton. You know he's funky! Catch his latest album and more info on music and concert dates at his website and his MySpace page.

3. Love, Love, Love
Lee Rogers - Lee reminds me a lot of Bob Schneider; he's a great acoustic/singer/songwriter artist. I think this song is beautiful. please forgive the awful, sucky mono sound quality. I found this song on the podsafe music network, which is also where I first discovered him. He's an independent artists that gets a lot of play from radio stations and has at least three albums out by now. He has a new website up where you can check out new music, albums and information about him.

4. Out Loud
Mindy Smith - I first heard her on Kink.fm (kudos to them) a few years ago. Kink still reserves air space for local and independent artists. One of the very few commercial stations to do this. Mindy Smith's more of a folk pop/alternative country artists but I love that kind of music anyway. You'll hear more from this genre anyway. You can visit her website here.

Promotion for Solipsistic Nation (you really should check this podcast out. It's awesome! I didn't add his promo to my own show for my health!). Information about artists Natalie Walker and Ques. 5. Slow Fade
Norwegian Lovebugs - I love the sound of this group. Found on the podsafe music network I've never heard of them before. This year they came out with a their debut album Love Bugs me. I hope to hear more from them because I already like what I've heard so far. They have a blog too but it's in Norwegian.

6. Crush
Natalie Walker - Melancholy, elegant, angelic voice - all of these things have been said about her music and these descriptions are right. You might have heard her music on shows like Ugly Betty and Big Shots. I've already described how much I like some of her songs in the show. Natalie is another artist I found through the Podsafe music network. Her website is chock full of music and information about past and up coming tour dates and concerts and tour projects. Check it out!

7. Always The Sun
Organic Audio aka Andy Spence aka half of The Freakniks - I bought this album because I wanted to hear Nurega, the track heard in The Fast and the Furious during the house party scene. But after having heard the entire album it's hard to decided which track is better. well, Always the Sun is my favorite track, obviously. It's an old favorite. Hope you enjoyed the show.

1. Rize
Median - Maybe you've noticed a pattern? No? Well ok I haven't been doing this show long enough for anyone to notice a pattern but I really love Median! You can find this song on his MySpace page or his Last.fm page. Buy his album. Doesn't stuff like this deserve to be in your music collection?

2. Strong Man
KaiZen - I first of KaiZen on Fanboy Radio. He and Scott were talking about some up and coming projects from the RZA. Strong Man is the current song on his MySpace page. Also known as KingZen, you can find his work at the Arson Optics site along with many other independent hiphop artists. A gold mine of great music! I look forward to hearing more of his work!

3. Biodiesel Willie
2012AM - Cool, experimental band I found this song on the podsafe music network. They really do remind me of Wilco! You can find the song at the podsafe music network and for more information on concerts and album go to their MySpace page.

4. Move On
Ted Lumley - One of my favorite kinds of music is good pop. I mean really good pop music. Ted Lumley makes great music like that. Lumley lists the influences for his musical sound on his Garageband site and you know what? I would add to the list Bob Schneider, one of my favorite local artists. Well, ok maybe he reminds me of Schneider on only one song. This one. I really love this song. Beautiful melody! Check out Ted Lumley on Garageband or MySpace!

5. Peter and Jane
.22 - Interesting name for a band. Reminiscent of Gang of Four. Well, to me anyway. I found this song on the podsafe music network. You can also find out more music and other information about .22 at their website.

6. Shoulda Never
Oh Darling - This is a local band to Portland, OR. You can find more information on their music, music videos and upcoming shows at their My Space page and the their band website. 7. Pecados Da Madrugada (Sins Before Dawn)
Suba - Suba's music stays in my CD changer all of the time. He's a genius, or, rather was a genius . Tragically he died in a fire in 1999. I was crushed when I heard it. We will never hear any new music from this master again. This song comes from the album Sao Paulo Confessions, from my music library. You can find most information on his other albums and projects starting here.

8. Agra (The Emerald Mix)
DJ Cheb i Sabbah - This comes from my own CD collection the song is from his album As Far as . . . I've amassed quite the little collection of electronica. Sabbah is one of the best in the business. I love all of his stuff. When you listen to Sabbah, you go on a journey. . . .

1.Beats - Sumter Boys Hiphop I love this song and I found it on the podsafe music network. It's so old school! A great sound that reminds me of back in the day when hiphop was fun to listen to! When it was about the music instead of the hos and cars and. . .whatever. I haven't found a website from this artist yet. If anyone knows, let me know.

2. Ian Axel - Afterglow
A New York artist who reminds me of Mark Joseph and John Mayer, he doesn't have an album out yet as far as I know. I bought this song through Garageband. You can visit him and hear more of his music at his MySpace page and his official website, which is really cool. Great, well-crafted music.

3. Adrina Thorpe - Midnight
There's a commercial radio station here in Portland, OR that seems to be way ahead of the curve when it comes to breaking new music. It's Kink.FM .They play music from new artists at least 4 to 5 months before the other commercial stations even know the music exists. They've been playing music from Adrina Thorpe for awhile now and she's been one of my favorite pop artists of recent memory. Here is one of her more recent singles. 4. Underworld - Trim
A long time electronica/ambient favorite of mine. This track is from their album A Hundred Days Off . You can get tour dates and new music tracks on their Myspace page and you can get more info on current and future projects from their non-music output page. Interesting stuff. Check it out. Become a member to the underworld live site and you can get exclusive music and video downloads from the group and artwork and all kinds of stuff.

5. Median - How Big Is Your World?
I first heard from this artist through the Indiefeed podcast. I love this song! He has a Myspace page (of course) and you can find his music through Last.fm. He has a lot of great music on both of those sites. Check him out!

6. J. Medeiros - Silent Earth
This dude blew up! I last saw him on Miami Ink (that show kinda sucks now that Kat's gone) and then I heard him on the radio! It's not hard to find out where to find his music. His album Of gods and girls is one of the best albums around right now. You can download it or get a preview of the entire album at his website and get more info from the Myspace page. A lot of great music can be found by Medeiros.

7. Pablo - Reincarnation
I did a lot of carping on one of my other blogs about not being able to find more info about Pablo after hearing this beautiful song Reincarnation on one of my Future Lounge compilation albums. This song is on Future Lounge 3. You can find Pablo under different aliases and a lot of great music from him if you look. Start here: www.pabloslab.com, Myspace.com/pabloslab. Reincarnation remains one of my all time favorite songs.

8. Ryehollow - Any Way You Say It
This is a local Portland band they're been getting airplay from Kink.FM from time to time. they make wonderful folk pop and its a wonder the other stations don't pick them up. Their loss. Don't let it be yours. This song stays in rotation in my mp3 player and in all of my iTunes playlists. I just love it! You'll probably hear it again in the future. The song that I use for my intro and outro is called Waltz of a Ghetto Fly from Amp Fiddler and it's off his album, Waltz of a Ghetto Fly.

Kink.FM, though it's a commercial radio station is definitely one of the better stations here in Oregon. They do mix it up with local and independent artists and have done so for many years. I've found out about quite a few local artists through them. See you with another show next week!

Never fear! I'm back! I'll be rolling out a short test show by the end of this coming weekend. I'm looking forward to sharing some of my favorite independent artists with everyone as well as exploring the music of new independent artists. Podcasts are the wave of the future, both for music fans and musicians. Who needs big labels anymore? I've written quite a few impassioned articles on the subject and now I'm trying to put my money where my mouth is! Stay tuned!

What Is Urban Outside?

So, you might be wondering what this is all about? To be honest, I'm still finding my way through this! What I can say is that I've been thinking about Urban Outside for a long time. I've wanted to host a pop/hiphop podcast before I even thought about creating a tango music podcast. So here it is, or at least it's coming soon.

Now, you might be asking: "Why are you playing pop along with hiphop Vargas?" My answer to that is: "Why not?" Urban Outside will be mostly a pop music podcast that will play a broad swath of music. You will find mostly pop and singer-songwriter artists but you will also find a little bit of hiphop and some electronica. I hope that doesn't scare you off. Don't let it. So many of us are used to having our entertainment boxed, packaged and ready to go like fast food and if they encounter some mixture of genres they feel doesn't fit neatly into a box they become indignant! If you like pop music you'll like Urban Outside but don't freak out on me if you hear a hiphop song or an acid jazz song thrown in every once in a while. One thing you can count on with this podcast is that the artists that will be showcased here will be independent.

For the past seven years I've been exploring and buying lots of independent music, all the way from world music to pop. I have a nice little collection of both big label and independent artists. It's too bad that I can't play stuff by U2 or Black Star. The big labels have a problem with the internet. They don't want podcasters to play their precious stuff. Boo to them! You know what? With the vast amount of great independent music out there who needs to play RIAA music? KaiZen, Adrina Thorpe and Koop make some great music. Expect to hear some of their music on Urban Outside. But then if you're a music lover I'm sure that you already know this so why I am blabbing?

So the question now is how often will I put out shows? So far as I can see either once or twice a month. I haven't decided yet. I'm just now gettin' the hang of this podcasting thing, so bear with me!
